I’m often asked when and what do I eat after a workout…

My general rule of thumb is to eat within 1 hour of a workout and eat a good combination of protein, slow complex carbs (fiber) and fat.

Recovery foods are important right after workouts because they help repair the body, reduce fatigue, and help get you ready for the next workout.

Here is one of my favorites. It meets all my nutrition criteria – It’s healthy, tasty, satisfying and nutrient-dense! This smoothie is made with dates, bananas and cacao powder & nibs!

This smoothie has potassium for hydration and carbohydrates and protein for regeneration. The cacao is very high in antioxidants which help stabilize and ultimately destroy free radicals in your cells and tissues.

Banana, Date, Cacao Smoothie
Serves: 2

Ingredients:
1 large frozen banana, peeled and cut into chunks
4 dates, pitted (soak dates for 10 minutes to soften as needed. I usually use really fresh dates and they don’t need soaking)
1 tablespoon raw cacao nibs
1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
1 cup unsweetened Almond Milk (or milk of choice)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3-4 ice cubes

Directions:
Place all ingredients in a high-powered blender (i.e., Vitamix or BlendTec) and puree until completely smooth.

Serve and Enjoy!
